AAWWWW! now this is another of my favs of greer's. random harvest is on AFI's 1oo passion movies, and it positively deserves a place on that list!! heehee!
this is a very romantic story although i have read that some people think it is too uncanny and it could never happen in real life......its a movie, its not suppose to be real life, but it sure would be awesome if it could happen in real every day life.
the story is about ronald coleman(smithy she calls him in the movie) who was in world war one and got hurt, therefore he ended uo in a psyciatric hospital. he lost his memory and has a speech impediment. he escapes from the hospital, and as soon as he walks out, the whole world finds out that the war has ended. along the way, he meets greer(paula ridgeway) in a cigarette store. she rescues him from someone calling the hospital to come get him and she takes him underneath her wing.
she gets him out of town and into the far away countryside and he figures out that he has a gift for writing. he comes up with the stories and she types them.
they get hsppily married and have a little boy, but disaster strikes......he gets hit by a car and loses his all of his memore of having met paula, but he regained his memory of his life before the war. the story goes on but i dont wanna give away the ending. but i will say that it ends happily and i always cry at the end....always! heehee!

this is a comment by my good friend dan!
"Here's an Imdb person's view of Random Harvest. I cant' say I know what the person is talking about in some movies called Now and Voyager but most certainly have heard of Casablanca. I like these comments because they don't reveal that much of the movies and also compare it to the beginning of Rebecca which is true as both movies draw you in from the beginning and you are hopelessly addicted to the outcome of the movie from that point on even if it would like run for 24 hours straight there is no way to take your eyes off of the screen for a second.
Imdb reviewer comments:
Along with NOW, VOYAGER and CASABLANCA, RANDOM HARVEST is one of the three most emotionally satisfying movies to ever come out of Hollywood's classic period, and a great example of the best that MGM had to offer in the '40s. Beautifully accomplished in every department from writing to art direction to cinematography to scoring, you have only to watch the first scene (so like REBECCA's) to be drawn in by it and then consistently surprised and entertained. And reading the 28 other comments here, I am struck by the unanimity of opinion -- because what makes the contrived plot believable scene by scene, and what causes the picture as a whole to live so warmly in the memory, is the unbeatable work from Ronald Colman and Greer Garson.
More than MRS. MINIVER, this is the archetypal Garson performance: her tact, gentle humor and intelligent restraint are in perfect service to her character and the story. If she seems too starry and aristocratic to be a lowly music hall performer, she is right in every other respect, particularly as an efficient secretary, society hostess and perfect helpmate. And this is Ronald Colman's best work ever. He should have won his Oscar for this lovely, subtle performance rather than for the strained work he did in A DOUBLE LIFE. Full of wistfulness as the amnesiac early in the film, there is real heartbreak in the way he says the line "I would have liked to have belonged to them" about the couple he hopes will turn out to be his parents. But he is just as convincing later as the confident, energetic 'Industrial Prince of England.'
Colman and Garson are the perfect grownup romantic couple: they make intelligence and maturity seem impossibly glamorous, and they embody the idea that friendship, loyalty and mutual respect must be at the center of every enduring love. "

I love this movie, it is one of my favorites, I first saw it when I was about 11 (a long long time ago) and was hooked from the beginning, Greer Garson and Ronald Colman are just magic together, the scene when he gives her the emerald after the party is so poignant and when they are at the railway station, him really not wanting her to go, but really not knowing why, just the best. Makes me tear up to think of it.

they were magic together gramdc. i love the part when he gives the emerald necklace to her and she says, you spoil me. it is actually so sad though, she really wants her smithy to come back but she knows she may never get him, even though she gives him no many hints throughout the movie. he was so blind, but then again didnt know to look for them i guess.

Random Harvest is absolutely my favorite movie of all time, and Greer is simply stunning in every scene. She was such a beautiful woman. I have both a VHS tape and a DVD of this movie and I have watched it about 12 times. I recently bought a 3 x 5 card with her signature on it. I'm now looking for a black and white image of her and then I will make a collage of them and frame them. Anyone got a good scan of a shot of her in the 4 to 6 meg range?

Hi Theresa, Do you have a list of all of Greer's romantic movies? I know she was in a bunch of movies where she was already married at the beginning and do deal with a great deal of romance but am looking for a list of movies she was in like Random Harvest where she meets someone and falls in love and then they could get married somewhere in the movie much like what happened in Random Harvest. This is the list of Greer Garson romantic movies I am looking for. I do seem to favor these type of movies a little more although the romance movies between a married couple that are married at teh beginning can be quite good as well. I guess I just like to see how people meet and fall in love and all that and am deprived of this when they are married and have kids already at the beginning. It seems like with these type of movies I miss the best part of the romance. Mrs Miniver is a very good movie as I have watched it several more times

Also, for any new Greer Garson fans like myself, one final reminder that Random Harvest will be on TCM thursday night at 9:30 eastern time zone which would mean quite a bit earlier for those in the central and western time zones. I consider this movie to be both Greer's best movie as well as my favorite Ronald Colman movie. It is a must see for anyone who is a Greer Garson or Ronald Colman fan. It more than likely ranks as my second favorite pure romance movie of all time behind only Gary Cooper's performance in Peter Ibbetson. In fact it may be on equal grounds to this movie and for sure Greer Garson is better in Random Harvest than Ann Harding was in Peter Ibbetson.
1. Program Title: Random Harvest A woman's happiness is threatened when she discovers her husband has been suffering from amnesia.CAST: Greer Garson, Ronald Colman, Susan Peters. DIR: Mervyn LeRoy. Romance. BW 127 mins. PLAYING ON TCM: 09/20/2007 09:30:00 PM

Let me put in a good word for "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". Greer is only in it for about 40 minutes, but the courtship is wonderful It's on DVD.
"Blossoms in the Dust", not on DVD, her first movie with Walter, also starts with a delightful courtship.
"Madame Cuire", on DVD, #3 with Walter, has an odd but very sweet geeky courtship.
"Mrs. Parkington" has a courtship of sorts, but it's not very romantic.
"Adventure" has a difficult courtship, which is the best you can expect with rough-and-tumble Clark.

Thanks Eds for the detailed recomendations. I did love Goodbye Mr Chips and have it on dvd and loved it. Your other choices all sound very good. I think the one I need to watch out for is Blossoms in the Dust as I think this might turn out to be my favorite movie she was in with Walter Pidgeon. I hope TCM plays it sometime soon or it is released on DVD in the near future. I have not seen Madame Cuire yet as I am not a scientific oriented person but will eventually get around to seeing this one.
