I saw this movie on TCM a few years ago, and have seen it many times since. I watch it often, and try to understand the movie more each time I see it.
I've also read the book, and if you've not read it...the screenplay had to be rearranged somewhat to create a more linear movie, that one can follow easily, and be more condensed from a story viewpoint.
The start of the film...the end of the First WW, a type of freedom, led to Charles' freedom. In the thickness of the fog, with the excitement of the war being over, the guards leave the post at the front gate. Charles sees this and gains his escape...to freedom. The war made him an asylum patient...and the end of the war gave him his freedom.
However, it would have been short-lived had Paula not found him in the tobacconist shop. She was a savior in so many ways.
The main themes of the movie are: faith, love, hope. These are recurring Biblical themes and promises God does make to anyone who will turn to him. Many movies of the 30s and 40s and 50s carried many such themes in them, even though audiences may not have specifically identified such with Christian virtues.
Of course, the film, unlike the book, is very pro-female, and Paula's love is the main driver in the film; she finds him, she follows him, she helps him, she understands him, she marries him, she trys to find him after his accident, she finds "him" again, later, as Charles Ranier, she goes on in hope...and is rewarded at the end.

Random Harvest is probably my all time favorite Greer Garson movie!! I have a question about some of the music. Do any of y'all know what the music is that's playing when Lady Rainer is dancing with the prime minister. I could almost start dancing myself. I'm sure it's some classical piece, but what? I adore it and would so love to download it from somewhere to my iPod.

I have read the book....I actually got it this summer.....I had to order it off of Amazon and I got a version that was printed in 1944 and it looks like it has Ronald Colman and Greer on the front cover. It was a very good book and I know what you mean about having to alter it. It was such a beautiful story and Greer couldn't have played Paula more perfectly.

There hasn't seemed to be much activity around here lately. I hope things pick up.
Did y'all know that there is a soundtrack of Random Harvest available and that our beloved Greer sings "She Is Ma Daisy" on it? It's glorious!!!

I'm positive! I've been listening to it since I got it yesterday. ;D It's the score of Random Harvest along with The Yearling. I was searching for the music that is playing when Lady Rainer dances with the prime minister. This cd has not only that, but all the available score that Herbert Stothart composed for Random Harvest. The cd liner notes are great! There are some beautiful pictures from Random Harvest in the notes plus the inside back cover of the cd case has a scene from the lake (Smithy fishing; Paula on her bike). A note on the back cover of the cd says that this pressing is limited to 3,000 copies. I got mine through Amazon, but try this link: www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=6304If that won't work, go to www.screenarchives.com and search for Random Harvest. Hope this helps and that you get the cd because it is *absolutely* glorious. I've downloaded it to my iPod already so I can take it with me anytime, and I scanned the pics in the liner notes to attach to the song info with my iPod. Now I can see Greer on my album covers!!!!!!!! Paula

I can't wait to see what you think. Let me know when you get it and what you think, please.
I love the Prime Minister Reception (track 7)! Cf course, it would be worth the price if only for having dear Greer singing "She is Ma Daisy" (track 31)!!! Plus it does have the beautiful music from the movie.
