now this tearjerker is such a great movie for romantic old-fashioned fools like me.
the movie starts with "chips" as a man in his eighties. he looks back into the past when he first became a teacher at brookfield school for boys. at first he is the sort of teacher that gets work out of the boys; very uptight all the time, but when he is invited by a frind,(another teacher), to go on a vacation he goes climbing on a mountain i forgot where. heehee! he gets sort of lost in the mist surrounding the mountain and hears a woman's voice echoing loudly. he think this woman is in danger, but when he climbs to the top to rescue her, he finds her unharmed and quite out of trouble. they sit in the mist getting to know and growing fond of each other. when the mist rises, they head down the mountain to find a search party looking for them both. the story goes on with them running into each other again coming off a boat on the blue danube. they dance to the waltz in vienna and kiss when katherine goes off on a train and departs from her chips. they finally marry and she makes him come to realize how loosened up he can be and that he can do what ever he puts his mind to. unfortunately katherine chips dies in childbirth and the story goes on with him taching generaqtions of boys from pretty much the same families.
robert donat much deserved his oscar for being mr. chips. and he was so cute as his character, i cant stand that it was remade...it completely ruined the story. i have seen e remake and it did not do the story as much justice as the first. of course this is a stubborn teenager stating her strong minded opinion. heehee!
