This is absolutely amazing. I don't suppose there's any way to download this from Youtube so that we can each have a permanent copy. Perhaps we can find this video somewhere else on the internet in a downloadable form. What a treasure.
It's an amazing piece of footage, not just for Greer but for all the Hollywood royalty that it showcases. Both Van Heflin and Alan Ladd are there, the two having just been in "Shane" together the previous year. Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, even Pat O'Brien.
I must say that Greer is a wonderful self-promoter. Halfway through her piece, the "host" thinks that she's all done, but then she starts talking about her own latest picture. Good for her. No point in wasting an on-camera opportunity. She is in such total command of the situation, she could've talked for an hour and that poor guy wouldn't have been able to stop her!
I do wish that we had been able to see and hear Greer's mother, who was with her at the event. A few of the other stars had been up there with their no-name spouses, so why not Nina?
I want to download this video !!!

i did love this video too, and i am so happy that i found it, b/c i had read that there was footage to this event and i knew greer was in it, but i could never find it, until now!! yippee!!! i think there is a way to download this onto your computer somehow, but i dont quite know how at the moment, ill ask one of my pallies, im sure someone knows something. i know!! she couldve talked all night and i wouldve listened all night, and i was really looking forward to seeing her mom and hearing what she sounded like when greer mentioned that she was there with her, but then they didnt show her. i love that coat she was wearing. greer was always up on the latest fashion, and i love that!!! i wish that guy hadnt tried to stop her in the middle of her conversation. it sounded kinda rude to me, but she just kept right on talking. heehee! i am going to watch it again, b/c i remember knowing who the person was right beside her, but totally spaced that person out. heehee! i thought it was so cute that she said," my husaband isnt with me tonight, buddy is down in texas right now" or something like that. AWWWWW!

I think that dude with Greer is some guy named George Fisher. My guess is that he really did think that Greer was finished talking, but she kept right on going. Ha!!
It's funny that Greer says at the end that the movie they're all about to watch stars "one of my favourite people". Eight years earlier, Judy Garland had spoofed Greer in "Ziegfeld Follies" in a segment called "Madame Crematon", a role that Greer had turned down since she didn't want to make fun of herself.
I thought Garland looked terrible in this video. MGM apparently had dropped her unceremoniously in 1950 and this movie, made at Warner's in 1954, was her first movie in four years. She was nominated for an Oscar for it and was expected to win, but lost to Grace Kelly.
And even though "A Star is Born" was successful, Warners dumped her afterwards and never made another movie with her.
When I was a kid (not long after this video was shot) I would see Garland in "Wizard of Oz" every year, one of the few movies which was broadcast annually on TV. (No VCRs or DVD players.) I would ask my mother what had happened to Judy Garland and she would shake her head and make some vague comment about alcohol or pills. Poor Judy was a sad case.

Here is a video of Greer of What's My Line broadcast May 12, 1956 in which she was a guest panelist. She is her usual charming self and quite glamorous. I am trying to locate a video of the entire show. I have been able to purchase videos of both her appearances on the show as a mystery guest. Occasionally, these are available on e-bay. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgib4c4MG0YYouTube - What's My Line TV Game Show

yeah ed, i used to be obssessed with judy garland before greer and read averything about her i could get my hands on. i knew all about her life and even tore up a book i read of her, b/c i didnt like the things that author said about her. i only kept the cover to it, b/c it was a good pic of her. i mean there were some rude things that werent true about her in it. i didnt especially like the way judy looked in this video either.
i think i knew that his name was george fisher. i just seemed to have forgot about it. greer and judy became acquainted with each other when greer was making pride and prejudice and they apparently became good friends. but later i read that judy was complaining about how well greer was being treater on the MGM studio sets and that she wanted to be treated as well as that. i dont really know what the extent of their friendship was to be honest.

I would like to make a correction on the What's My Line video. It was broadcast May 12, 1957, not 1956. Also, a video of the "A Star Is Born" premier is available on VHS when you purchase the movie. It is a 2 tape set in widescreen format. One tape is the movie and one tape the premier. I purchased it on Amazon.com. Speaking of Judy Garland, here is a photo of Greer and Liza Minelli taken sometime in the 1960's. Notice all the moles on Liza's neck!

Here's a still from that "What's My Line" appearance. This may not be the most flattering shot, but it's interesting to watch what she looks like when she's let her guard down and is thinking hard so that we can see what she's like when she's not "on" for the public. (Perhaps I've watched this video a few too many times.)

Yes, when she's trying to formulate her question, and thinking hard about the man's profession, she does things with her mouth that I've never seen.
Love it!!
