this is another one of my alltime fav movies. she of course plays elizabeth bennet while larry olivier plays the handsome, yet supercilious mr. darcy. they are totally one hundred percent perfect for these roles, and i dont know why they had to go and remake them, i mean i dont mind either of the remakes, but the original is so much better in my opinion, naturally! heehee! i think we all know how this story goes, boy meets girl, girl gets mad at boy, boy tries to win her affection, girl doesnt like that, girl and boy become friends, girl gets mad again, boy proposes, girl turns him down, they fall in love, boy proposes again and they kiss....FINALLY! heehee! i always get so nervous about whether they get together at the end, even though ive already seen it a million times, i couldnt let that spoil my fun now could i? heehee! then when they finally kiss, i always start to cry....i guess its a dramatic thing.

Long before 19th-century novelist Jane Austen became a hot property in Hollywood, MGM produced this opulent and entertaining adaptation of one of Austen's best-known novels. The elegant and slyly satirical comedy of manners gets under way when socially conscious Mrs. Bennet (Mary Boland), with the begrudging assistance of her husband (Edmund Gwenn), begins seeking out suitable (and suitably wealthy) husbands for her five daughters: Elizabeth (Greer Garson), Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), Lydia (Ann Rutherford), Kitty (Heather Angel), and Mary (Marsha Hunt). One of the least likely matrimonial prospects is Mr. Darcy (Laurence Olivier), a rich, handsome, but cynical and boorish young man. Naturally, Elizabeth Bennet, the strongest-willed of the Bennet girls, is immediately fascinated by him, and she sets out to land him -- but only on her own terms, and only after she has exacted a bit of genteel revenge for his calculated indifference to her. Though Austen's novel was set in 1813, the year of its publication, the film version takes place in 1835, reportedly so as to take advantage of the more attractive costume designs of that period. Not surprisingly, a few changes had to be made to mollify the Hollywood censors (eager to find offense in the most innocent of material): the most notable is the character of Mr. Collins (Melville Cooper), transformed from the book's hypocritical clergyman to the film's standard-issue opportunist.

greer once said that the reason for the wrong period of costumes was that they were leftover patterns from gone with the wind. although i must say that i couldnt see it any other way. i love watching all the sisters practically float down the streets running in those poofy dresses. heehee! i do think it would have been interesting to see them wearing the right period of costumes though.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite of Austen's novels and I always see Greer as Miss Elizabeth Bennett. She perfectly captures her delicate but sly wit and quick perception. Olivier was the perfect Darcy, too. Stiff as a board, but underneath beats a kind heart.

well the first time i read the book, i had already seen the movie, so i did picture greer and laurence in the book, and i agree that they did splendidly as the characters of elizabeth and mr. darcy. i tried watching the other two with colin firth and kiera knightly, but they just dont compare to the original in my opinion. i just cant see it dont any other way. ;D

Originally Hunt Stromberg got this film for Norma Shearer as a follow up to The Women. How did Greer end up getting it?

it may have been intended for norma, but vivien leigh really wantred to do it, and they contemplated her doing it, b/c she wanted to be with larry olivier. but larry as well as everyone else thought greer would be the best choice and she agreed with them. vivien leigh wasnt too happy about this.
she was always kind of made at greer, b/c greer had been olivier's first romance in london before she came to the US. then when greer accepted vivien's oscar for a street car named desire for her, she still had feelings against her. but eventually they kind of got along.
i remember reading about norma shearer being the first choice for p & p, but either she declined it, or she was working on another project or something like that. im not entirely sure how she got out of playing elizabeth bennett.

What a difficult choice. Vivien and Norma would've been both exceptional as Elizabeth. I never knew Larry and Greer were once lovers. I knew they were friends back in London during the early 30s, but that's interesting. They should've done more films together.

vivien and norma are difficult choices. both of them did fantastic in period dramas. but im sticking to loving greer as elizabeth bennett. heehee!

Watching this "P&P" last October turned me into a Greer addict.
I had seen it in TV in the 1960s, but in those days you couldn't rewind it or watch it over and over again, and I never gave Greer a second thought. Until last October.
I have read that Oliviier wanted Vivien Leigh to play Elizabeth, because they were lovers. But MGM didn't want them in a movie together because Olivier was still married to Jill Esmond and they didn't want a scandal.
(Jill Esmond has a small role in "Random Harvest".)

Here's a couple of cute photos with Laurence Olivier taken during the filming of Pride & Prejudice. Regarding whether or not they were "lovers", I have read two biographies on Olivier, and in both it said he was very attracted to her, but neither book claimed it went any further than that.

hey red and rusty!
rusty, i have read many bios on olivier and in a couple they said that they dated each other in London when they were on stage together, but it didnt go any further than that, and then when they made Pride and Prejudice, he was again attracted to her, but he was with vivien at that time, so he didnt say anything about it until later on in his life.
