i think he looks cute either way too paula!
i read in one of my photoplay magazines that while making madame curie, you know how he grew a beard for the role? well his wife didnt like him with a beard, so she went on a vacation while he made the movie with greer, but greer seemed to think he was very handsome with a beard. it is funny, b/c he went to a hollywood party during the making of madame curie and a woman made a move on him there, so he just got up and left. how is that for loyalty to your wife. i think that is cute!!!!! i think it explains about his beard in her bio too, but i dont remember. heehee!

At the Oscar ceremony in March 1943, when Greer won her Oscar, there were pictures taken of Greer with Walter and Ronnie, and Walter is clearly starting on his "Curie" beard.
I have one such picture on my web site, a picture that I got from eBay. It's at the start of the "Mrs. Miniver" section, where the heading says "Oscar nomination #3".
There's another picture of the three of them at that ceremony, sitting at a table with their arms linked. It's a closeup. It's in the Vanity Fair book "Oscar Night", which was sitting around at our local bookstore for a whole year.
Every time I went to that bookstore (at least twice a week) I would gawk at that picture. I didn't buy the book because it was $100. My wife said I should've bought the book, scanned the picture, and then returned the book.
Anyway, that book is gone, returned to their warehouse and no longer available through them.
Argh!!
Walter looks great with the early version of his "Pierre" beard. He reminds me of Alec Baldwin.

that is cute about you going into that store and gawking at that picture. i was on this military base once for my grandma going to her doctor(my gramdpa used to be in the air force) and there was this large book sale there. she knows i dont like doctors and they make me faint, so i went to that book sale and decided to look around a bit. well i found a book there to look at, coincidentally it was a book with all the Life magazines up to a certain year, and it had pictures in it, and articles and i was so amazed by it.i found a pic in there of all the stars on the MGM lot with Louis mayer in color that was a close-up sio i could see every one in it.of course walter and greer were in it and i was focusing on them. heehee! i was pointing to each and naming them without looking at their names to see who i could recognize.it was funny b/c the guy at the counter kept watching me the whole time, and he came up to me and saw what i was looking at, and he said, "you can actually name all those stars?" and i said, "yes". he looked so surprised and wondered how i could know all those people. i told him that i was obssessed with all old movies and he asked about my favs. and we had a nice little chat. i had been there for at least an hour waiting for my grandma, and when i was about to leave, the guy came up to me again, and just handed me the same book and said," this is yours". i was shocked, and said, "but i didnt pay for it", and he replied, " well i saw how fascinated you were with it, that i decided to give it to you". he was such a sweetheart and noone had ever done that for me before. it turned out that he was the owner of that little book sale. was i surprised! heehee!

The Life Magazine photo might be too large to scan as it is a centerfold, the size of two pages. I have that magazine and it doesn't fit in my scanner. Here is a smaller version I won on E-bay.

There's a B&W version of this pic in the bio, and I've been hungering for a year to get a larger version, preferably in colour. This is great.
(The pic in the bio is not the exact same shot.)
Look who is sitting right beside Louis B., his two favourites, namely Kate and Greer!!
