Greer Garson ... Marise Aubert Robert Mitchum ... Paul Aubert Richard Hart ... Jean Renaud
this is i think my least favorite film with greer. i dont hate it, but i dont absolutely love it. its okay.
Shortly after WWII, flashbacks tell the story of Marise, her husband Paul, and Jean, who was imprisoned with Paul in a German camp. While attempting to escape from the camp Paul is shot, and Jean goes to see Marise, confirming the news she had gotten already about Paul's death. Jean has fallen in love with Marise through the stories Paul told him, and wants to stay with her in the seaside town in Brittany where Paul owned a small business.marise doesnt love jean, but he sorta forces their relationship on.

Joseph Ruttenberg was Greer's favourite cinematographer.

Here's a photo of Greer in the Monterey Community Hospital taken after her "brush with death". Notice the scrathces on her arms. If you're not familiar with the story, the MGM publicist Emily Torchia, a photographer, and the fisherman Vincent Sollecito who pulled her out of the ocean, climbed in the window of her hospital room to take these pictures because the doctor would not allow anyone into the room. She looks great even after being tossed in the ocean! I live in northern California and have visited Carmel/Pebble Beach many times. She's lucky she didn't fall on her face as those rocks are hot smooth as you would expect from constant waves, but extremely jagged.

i have never seen that pic of her in the hospital bed before. man she looks good for being swept off the rocks like that. i pictured her face being a little scratched up too, maybe she didnt get so many scratches on her face, or did she and they just put makeup on her in the hospital?

Here's another photo taken from a different angle. She didn't have any scratches on her face because she landed on her rear, according to cinematographer Joseph Ruttenberg. She doesn't look like she's wearing any makeup. Actually, she was in the hospital because she injured her back in the fall, not because of the scratches. Monterey Community Hospital is a small hospital. I'm sure having a celebrity there caused quite a commotion.

thank you for that pic rusty!!! i love it. i knew about all her back problems and read that that nasty fall just made it worse for her. it doesnt look at all like she didnt have makeup on. i think she still looked quite pretty even if she didnt have makeup on.

Even though this wasn't a popular movie, she still looked beautiful.

The thing that had captured me most with this film was the house by the ocean. I've always longed to live in the country, or near an ocean -- in a small cottage away from the city. That's the first thing that lured me in. Secondly was the mystery about the soldier. His half crazed and desperate 'need' for her was curious. Her apprehension to let him into her life and let him traipse through her and her dead husbands memory was a twist I wasn't expecting from the plot. The doctors advice toward the end gave me goosebumps when she....
Well, I won't ruin the ending for those who have yet to see it. But I did enjoy the movie for the fact that all wish to seek happiness; and for those who may feel as though they have not another chance, love creeps in unexpectedly and, sometimes, comes at the wrong moments in time.

Here's a picture of George Cukor with Greer, presumably from the set of "Desire Me".

lush pic, as Butter quite rightly said, I don't think there was a time when she wasn't beautiful.
